A global review of guidelines for diagnosing sepsis is necessary, experts have argued.
In a recent study, researchers from Monash University and the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society found that 1-in-8 patients with infections severe enough to require admission to an intensive care unit were not diagnosed with sepsis under the classic criteria.
"We're hoping the taskforce that's been put forward to review these criteria takes these findings into account when they come to look at them later on this year," associate professor David Pilcher from Monash, co-author of the study, said.
