Researchers are planning to develop a home-grown framework for registered nurses working with older people and their families.
Associate Professor Victoria Traynor, from the University of Wollongong's School of Nursing, said the available nursing competencies for the aged-care sector were developed in North America where the model of healthcare and nursing is very different to Australia.
“As the ageing population continues to grow we need to find better ways to provide effective services to this consumer group and their families,” Traynor said.
The team from UOW is looking for registered nurses to volunteer for a study to help them assess the competencies of nurses in the aged-care system.
The project, Developing Gerontological Nursing Competencies: A Delphi study, is a collaboration among UoW and providers HammondCare, Uniting, Scalabirni, Anglicare and BaptistCare.
The team aims to develop a freely available online resource that will help aged-care organisations adopt a whole-of-organisation strategic approach to planning services and in-house professional education programmes to ensure clients' needs are met.
It will also allow registered nurses to plan professional development activities and create career pathways.
Traynor said this kind of information is vital for those involved in the aged-care sector.
