Dementia

Susan McCarthy, Executive Director Client Services, Dementia Australia

Susan has responsibility for nationwide support services and education for people living with dementia, their carers and families. She manages the delivery of the national dementia helpline, the younger onset dementia key worker program, dementia advisory services, counselling, and education for people living with dementia, carers and community.

Mental Health & Suicide

Dr Roderick McKay, Director, Psychiatry and Mental Health Programs, HETI, and Conjoint Senior Lecturer, UNSW

Mental illness and suicide are often seen as taboo topics when talking with older people, but there is much to be gained by overcoming this. Roderick’s presentation will provide an overview of key issues to consider in starting the conversation.

In addition to Roderick’s experience as a clinician, clinical leader, teacher and policy adviser, he is a past binational chair of the RANZCP Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age and chair of the RANZCP Community Collaboration Committee.

Sex & Intimacy

Tracey Clark, General Manager, Allied Health Services, Montefiore

Tracey has worked as a physiotherapist and allied health manager for 20 years in the UK, USA and Australia in acute care, rehab, community and aged care.

Initially specialising in neurological rehabilitation, Tracey has since broadened her knowledge in the community and in acute care to include pain management, sexuality and intimacy, and elder rehabilitation. In the last 11 years, she has worked solely in aged care with a special interest in promoting the importance of intimacy and expression of sexuality as fundamental to a person’s wellbeing.

Elder Abuse

Pat Joyce, Manager Advocacy at Seniors Rights Service

Pat has 30 years’ experience as a registered nurse in aged care, rehabilitation and orthopaedics and holds degrees in nursing and art therapy. She works as an advocate for older people receiving care and services to ensure they have a voice for their individual needs and choices, and are empowered to speak up for their rights to quality care and quality of life.

Seniors Rights Service provides advocacy, advice, education and legal services to older people in New South Wales, as well as education to aged care facilities. Among their focuses are human rights issues, including elder abuse.

End of Life

Deborah Parker, Professor of Aged Care (Dementia) at the UTS Faculty of Health

Deborah’s primary areas of research are palliative care for older people, dementia and health services evaluation in aged care. She has received over $35 million in research funding. She is a co-lead on the $15 million End of Life Directions in Aged Care (ELDAC) project, which is designed to increase understanding and awareness of advance care planning and specialist care in aged care.

At Tackling the Taboo, Deborah will explore conversations about end-of-life care issues and provide strategies to help those working in aged care better handle them.
