The topics of sex and intimacy are often taboo and not normally considered when we talk about the elderly.
But how does sex and intimacy differ as people age? And how can staff be inclusive of these decisions?
Tracey Clark, general manager of allied health services at Montefiore, gave a presentation on the topic at a recent Aged Care Insite seminar.
Clark said staff require education and support to create a safe environment for residents’ sexual needs. She added that adopting inclusive language was especially useful when trying to foster an understanding of the LGBTI community in aged care.
Aged Care Insite spoke with Clark to further investigate how older people view these topics and how staff can navigate them.Do you have an idea for a story?
