Bethany Hodgkins has always had an interest in science, having completed her first degree in nutrition at the University of Canberra (UC). At the beginning of 2010, she went back to uni to study nursing - the science of caring.

“I decided I wanted to become a nurse when I was doing a ministry traineeship with my church. I think that nursing will enable me to show love and compassion for people and help people practically,” Bethany said.

When Bethany signed up to RCNA’s Nursing Student Complimentary Membership (NSCM) program, she admitted she knew only “a little” about the work of RCNA. “I knew they offered scholarships to nurses but I did not know the scope of their support for the nursing profession,” she said.

“I look forward to the [RCNA member] benefits that are on offer, including the opportunity to maintain my standard of practice through professional development once I am registered. I think I also will appreciate the publications that keep us up-to-date with relevant policies related to nursing practice.

“It is great to know we have RCNA lobbying on our behalf for legislative issues.

She is also very enthusiastic about RCNA’s 3LP program, explaining, “I believe professional development is crucial to continuing to be a competent nurse”.

As for her nursing studies, Bethany was keen to share some of her highlights so far: “I have really enjoyed the first year foundational subject for nursing. This subject included a lot of ‘hands on’ learning, including weekly workshops in make-shift wards. This has enabled me to learn new skills quickly. Part of this subject also included going on a clinical placement. I was able to gain a greater understanding about what being a registered nurse will be like and the responsibilities and roles that I will have in a particular ward in the hospital.

“I enjoyed being able to work with patients; learning how to communicate with patients through both negative and positive experiences. I think the best way to learn is by getting involved and putting theory into practice.”

For Bethany, nursing is all about care and competency. “I hope to achieve in nursing the ability to communicate to patients that I care about them. I would like to also achieve competency as a nurse so that as I care for the patients they will have full confidence in my ability,” she said.
