The charm and challenge of making decisions

The role of clinical nurse consultant in adolescent and young adult cancer has brought some autonomy to one woman's work co-ordinating care.

Fiona Maguire is a young adult CNC at Prince of Wales Hospital Youth Cancer Services. Prior to this, she was an RN in a clinical ward area and also a clinical nurse specialist.

“[My current role] is different in that I can make decisions on my own, based on my own assessment," Maguire said. "I’m not always having to be guided by a medical team or anything like that, so it is quite good in that way.

“You have a lot of responsibility and you have to be comfortable with making decisions, obviously with input from the team but guided by your own experience.”

Maguire spoke with health editor Dallas Bastian about what led her to work specifically with adolescents and young adults, and about some of the more challenging and rewarding aspects of her role.
