Governor General appointed patron for the Maggie Beer Foundation

Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC, Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia, has been appointed patron for the Maggie Beer Foundation.

The Foundation, established in 2014, is a charitable organisation aimed at the improving food, nutrition and quality of life for older Australians through research, education and advocacy. It's supported by a board of volunteers, which the Governor General will now join as inaugural patron.

“We are incredibly honoured to have the Governor General as patron of the Foundation,” said Jane Mussared, chief of The Maggie Beer Foundation.

The Governor General has made it clear that aged care is a personal priority since her appointment to the position on 1 July 2024.

In her swearing-in speech Ms Mostyn spoke of the ways in which care contributes to our national identity, saying “the gentle thought and the outstretched hand that Australians have always been ready to share when great challenges present themselves. Care is the quieter, better part of ourselves.”

“I am delighted to serve as Patron of the Maggie Beer Foundation and look forward to supporting their work in the community. Under Maggie’s leadership, the team are an example of people who have seen an area of need and are committing their care, expertise and passion to making a difference,” said the Governor-General.

The Maggie Beer Foundation continues to pursue its mission of raising the bar for food and dining within the aged care sector, with the support of the federal government.

“It should be everyone’s right to have good food and I believe that no one group of people need it more. My hope is that every meal can give comfort and pleasure, always something to look forward to," Maggie Beer said.

"There is much work to be done but the journey is so exciting. There are those already doing brilliantly looking after the elderly and I wish to find them and reward them with kudos.

"For those in aged care homes not lucky enough to have leadership that understands the importance; the difference; that good food and the way it is delivered can make, we believe by working closely with those who wish to embrace the principles of the joy that food can bring, we can change lives.”
