HammondCare expands with Anglicare home care acquisition
The acquisition is expected to expand access to dementia and palliative care expertise for older Australians living at home
HammondCare is set to become the largest provider of home care services in Greater Sydney after reaching an agreement to acquire Anglicare Sydney’s community-based home care operations.
The acquisition, which remains subject to regulatory approval and completion of the transaction, will see approximately 1,800 Support at Home clients and more than 1,400 Commonwealth Home Support Program clients transition to HammondCare across Greater Sydney and the Illawarra. HammondCare is expected to commence services on 2 November 2026.
HammondCare chief Andrew Thorburn said the acquisition aligned with the organisation’s strategy to expand its home care services, particularly for people with complex needs.
“This growth in our home care business will enable us to deliver care to even more people and fulfil our mission to improve the quality of life of people in need,” Mr Thorburn said.
“And importantly, clients can feel confident knowing they’re supported by an organisation that can continue to meet their needs over time, helping them to live at home for as long as they possibly can.”
The not-for-profit providers said continuity of care would be the priority throughout the transition, with many Anglicare Sydney staff expected to move to HammondCare alongside the clients they currently support.
Anglicare Sydney chief Simon Miller said HammondCare was well placed to take over the service because of the two organisations’ shared values and approach to care.
“HammondCare’s vision, mission and values align closely with Anglicare’s and I’m confident they will ensure all transferring clients are continued to be provided with high-quality care,” Mr Miller said.
He said changes to the aged care system under Support at Home had altered the economics of community care provision.
“HammondCare’s larger scale means they can sustainably operate and grow community-based homecare while honouring their missional foundations,” he said.
Home care services delivered by Anglicare Sydney within its seniors living villages will remain with the organisation through its For Life program.
Sector consolidation continues
This latest transaction follows a period of expansion for Anglicare Sydney.
In March, the provider announced it would acquire residential aged care operator Infinite Care in a move that created one of Australia’s largest Christian for-purpose aged care providers.
That acquisition was formally completed earlier this month, expanding Anglicare Sydney’s footprint to 46 residential aged care homes, around 5,300 beds and approximately 7,500 staff across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia.
Anglicare chief Simon Miller said the completion represents a major milestone in building scale and sustainability at a time when aged care providers are under pressure to meet rising demand and regulatory change.
“Together with Infinite Care and Autumn Aged Care, we are bringing together three organisations with a shared commitment to dignity, belonging and whole‑of‑person care,” he said.
“Bringing our organisations together creates the opportunity for a powerful platform to build on their strengths and deliver even greater care and choice to older Australians.”
