COVID-19: Man in his 20s dies suddenly, his aged care worker wife hospitalised

The Bondi cluster has claimed its youngest victim to date, as an otherwise young, fit and healthy man from Liverpool died of COVID-19 on Tuesday.

NSW chief health officer Kerry Chant announced on Wednesday the sudden death of a 27-year-old man, who was in isolation and being checked on daily by health authorities.

“He was being checked daily and he did complain of feeling a little fatigued, but the deterioration happened suddenly,” she said.

“It is important that we understand that with Covid you can get sudden deaths and I think that is important to understand your health status can deteriorate.”

Chant said that the man lived with another person with COVID-19 who has since been hospitalised.

The man has since been revealed to be Aude Alaskar, a forklift driver. His wife is reported to be an aged care worker who contracted the virus first. They married only three months ago. 

Alaskar was on day 13 of his isolation after his positive test; he was said to be unvaccinated.

“You can imagine the trauma for that other person who has now been hospitalised,” Dr Chant said.

“That person also had Covid and that person has been hospitalised and offered all care.”

Alaskar’s death has been referred to the coroner, Dr Chant added.

There have been 4,319 locally acquired cases in NSW since 16 June.
