Nurses don’t expect to be thanked but deserve to be: campaign

Dear nurse,

Thank you.

That’s the message at the heart of a new video tribute created by the Queensland University of Technology.

Released to coincide with the 40-year anniversary of QUT’s School of Nursing, the video thanks the nurses it has educated for their dedication to the profession and the communities they serve.

Since opening in 1978, the School of Nursing has seen thousands of students graduate. Three of which – Adam, Ida and Tricia – are the focus of the campaign, which sees patients, their families, and nursing and medical colleagues speak about the nurses and their work.

Said Chloe, a patient: “Five years ago, I got diagnosed with cancer and, as you would know, that’s a really difficult time for someone who was that young. You’ve always brightened up my face when you walk in the room… That’s what has inspired me to become a nurse as well.”

Distinguished Professor Patsy Yates, QUT’s head of nursing, said while nurses don’t seek out thanks or praise, the university team thought it was important to acknowledge their roles in the community and the difference they make to people’s lives.

“It is quite incredible to look back at the advances in healthcare and nursing practice over the last four decades and what these changes mean for how we prepare the next generation of nurses,” Yates said.
