Nurses honoured on ANZAC Day coin

Enter Nursing Review’s ANZAC day competition to win commemorative coin.

Nurses have served alongside Australia’s Defence Forces in every conflict and peacekeeping mission since 1879. To pay tribute to their continuous service and legacy, the Perth Mint has released a special commemorative coin to coincide with Australia’s ANZAC day celebrations.

Designed by head designer, Wade Robinson, the $1 collector coin recognises the significant role of nurses in Australia’s military history and symbolically portrays nurses from both world wars. A bugler in silhouette, the inscription ‘Lest We Forget’ and the date of ANZAC Day, April 25, also feature in the design.

“Australian and New Zealand Defence Force nurses and those in peacekeeping missions often suffered the same deprivations as their patients, and sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.  In 2012, the Perth Mint’s ANZAC Day commemorative coin honours their efforts and bravery,” said Perth Mint chief executive, Ed Harbuz.

Since the annual coin series was launched at the WA State War Memorial in 2009, the commemorative themes have included Remembrance (2009), the Royal Australian Navy (2010), and the Royal Australian Airforce (2011).

To celebrate its release, Nursing Review is offering readers the chance to win their own ANZAC day collector coin with illustrated envelope.

To enter the ANZAC day competition, email your name, address and a response to the following question to [email protected].

The five best responses will receive a commemorative gold coin and will have their answers published in the June edition of Nursing Review.

Competition question: In 200 words or less tell us about a military nurse (living or dead) who you most admire and why?

The competition closes 5pm, Wednesday May 23. Winners will be notified by email.
