Chris Del Mar: patients’ unrealistic expectations harmful

Health editor Dallas Bastian spoke with professor Chris Del Mar from the centre for research in evidence-based practice at Bond University about his recent research into the public’s expectations of medical tests and treatments.

A study by Del Mar and colleague associate professor Tammy Hoffmann discovered that most people overestimate the benefits and underestimate the harms of medical tests and treatments.

In the interview, Del Mar discussed the problems associated with these expectations or misunderstandings and the consequences that could arise should they continue.
