Psychiatrists release family guide for eating disorders

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) has released a new resource about care and treatment for people with an eating disorder.

Eating disorders: Your guide to what they are and how they are treated has been developed by psychiatrists, along with consumer and carer representatives.

It covers common eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, in adults, teenagers and children. The guide also includes information for people who think they might have an eating disorder and for family, friends and carers.

RANZCP president professor Malcolm Hopwood said for many people with eating disorders and their family members, knowing where to turn is difficult.

"High-quality information can encourage people to access care and treatment earlier, and increase understanding of these complex conditions," Hopwood said.
