90-year-old aged care resident ‘fought back’ against attacker in sickening sexual assault

A 90-year-old aged care resident who woke to a man sexually assaulting her in a sickening attack at a Victorian nursing home managed to fight back against her attacker, police have revealed.

The woman woke to find the man sexually assaulting her at the Geelong aged care centre about 4.45am on Sunday.

Sexual crimes squad Detective Acting Inspector Mark Burnett said the courageous woman fought back against her attacker before staff raised the alarm.

The man is described as being aged between 20 and 25 years old, fair skinned, of a thin build, about 163cm tall and wearing dark coloured pants, a dark coloured long-sleeve T-shirt and a red beanie.

“She was able at one point to activate her personal distress alarm,” Inspector Burnett said.

“That’s resulted in nursing staff attending and scaring away … the attacker.”

Inspector Burnett said the facility was secure but investigators had not yet determined how the man entered the aged care residence.

A manhunt was launched, with the dog squad also searching the area for the offender.

Inspector Burnett said the woman suffered some injuries and the medical care was ongoing.

“She is impressive, she is very cognisant of what’s occurred and is a fighter,” he said.

“This is a particularly confronting incident. This female victim – one of the more vulnerable people within our society – has been attacked within her home.”

Police have urged any residents, businesses or anyone passing through the area with CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.
