65-year-old aged care resident publishes third book: podcast

A writer is proving that moving into residential aged care doesn't have to change your life.

John Donohoe joined Uniting Epping Carinya five years ago at age 60 after his landlord passed away and sold his apartment, and is still following is dream of writing about Australian history and lore.

He's often referred to by his fifteen-year-older neighbours as 'young' John when he joins them for morning tea.

"It’s like I have a whole lot of aunties who are always there to help. It’s good in that way," he said.

John's latest book, 'Captain Thunderbolt’s Folly - The Day the Gentleman Bushranger Got Himself Killed', takes the reader back to May 8th, 1870 to explore the live of Australia's longest-roaming bushranger in history.

A criminal known as Captain Al Frederick Ward had been on the run for seven years after escaping a prison on Cockatoo Island and was later shot dead by a young policeman.

Join Aged Care Insite's conversation with John about his new book and the journey of being a writer while living in residential aged care in your 60s.
