Pathology reports go online

Queensland-based pathology lab InfinityPATH has announced it will upload its pathology reports to the My Health Record system to improve the state's health outcomes.

The announcement follows similar agreements made by Primary Health Care, Australian Clinical Labs, Sonic Healthcare and several other organisations, to send pathology reports to My Health Record.

InfinityPATH founder and managing director Mitchell Wan said the reports were a vital tool for identifying the cause of disease, and underpinned other aspects of medicine such as diagnostic testing, chronic disease monitoring and blood transfusion technologies.

"InfinityPATH's passion in IT innovation is only overtaken by our desire to enhance the continuity of patient care. We are proud to be one of the first diagnostic organisations to build a direct integration with the My Health Record system," he said.

“The company’s 85-strong team has a passion for delivering surgical pathology services, and services metropolitan and regional general practitioners and specialists in Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia.”

Fellow InfinityPATH director Dr Robert Pennisi agreed the information would be useful for the sector.

"Information is the lifeblood of medicine and health information technology is its circulatory system," he said.

"Our team has collaborated with the Australian Digital Health Agency to help improve health outcomes and to support national digital health initiatives."

Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) president, Associate Professor Bruce Latham, said access to pathology reports by consumers and clinicians via the My Health Record was an important step forward.

“Australian pathology providers are world leaders in science and information technology and are proud to support the community and promote the appropriate use of pathology testing,” Latham said.

More pathology laboratories are expected to connect to the system over the coming months.
