25yo pleads guilty to attempted rape of aged care resident

A man has pleaded guilty to trying to rape a resident at an aged care centre in Victoria.

Shane Huici, a 25-year-old factory worker, appeared on Friday at the County Court in Melbourne and admitted to his attempt to rape the 90-year-old woman.

In 2021, Mr Huici broke into Tannoch Brae Aged Care Centre in St Albans – 80km southwest of Melbourne.

During a committal hearing in January 2022, police alleged he entered the woman's room after he climbed through an unlocked window before he orally raped her in the bed.

The woman allegedly woke up to find Mr Huici pinning her to the bed before she scrambled to set off a distress alarm nearby.

She was later rushed to hospital after she allegedly suffered injuries to her forearm and had multiple cuts to her lip.

Court documents stated the man unlawfully entered the centre, recklessly caused injury, and stole two keys from the facility.

Mr Huici appeared via video link on Friday before pleading guilty to the lesser charge of attempted rape, as well as aggravated burglary, recklessly injuring the victim, and theft.

He will no longer face trial for rape, for which he pleaded not guilty.

Mr Huici will face court again next year in April for a plea hearing.
