Palliative Care conference to hear from UK end-of-life nursing expert

Palliative Care Victoria (PCV) is hosting its biennial Insight Outside: Keeping The Essence Of Palliative Care Alive at Bayview Eden hotel in Melbourne from Thursday 28 July 2016 through Friday 29 July 2016. There are also several pre-conference workshops on Wednesday 27 July 2016.

PCV CEO Odette Wanders said this gathering was planned for a critical time in palliative and aged care.

"There is a growing impetus and imperative for more integrated, holistic and person-centred health, aged care and disability services at a time of unprecedented increases in need and efforts to manage expenditure," said Wanders.

"Palliative care must provide the leadership, innovation and capacity building required to realise these aspirations and to improve the quality of life of people with advanced chronic illnesses as they approach the end of their lives."

The keynote speakers are Dr Heather Richardson from St Christopher's Hospice in the United Kingdom and Dr Emilio Herrera from the New Health Foundation in Spain.

Richardson will be sharing learnings from her experiences in the aged care industry, in a discussion titled Reflections on Hospice and Palliative Care in the UK: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

"One of the key elements of my job is connecting someone with a problem to someone else with an answer," Richardson said. "Having a background as a nurse has been important in establishing the principles upon which I base my priorities and decisions on a daily basis."
